Baby Myths

So Orginally I was going to try to do a creature design but with GOW and CLASH comming out there was too much of that out there to influence. I decided to do a cartoony peice with several Greek Mythological creatures as kids...I had fun with this one..

Ares & Athena

I tried to post earlier but life got in the way. I stuck with Greek Mythology. This piece is Ares: the god of war and Athena: the goddess of wisdom AND warfare. I figured they would make a good team. This was done in graphite on paper. Enjoy.

Heracles 12 Labors

Heracles' 12 Labors. Good Times. Not quite up to what I wanted it to be, but I have other stuff to do. Good Topic.

As per Tom's Request, the twelve labors are (starting from the bottom left lion and working clockwise)
1. Slay the Nemean Lion
2. Slay the 9-headed Lernaean Hydra.
3. Capture to Golden Hind of Artemis.
4. Capture the Erymanthian Boar.
5. Clean the Augean stables in a single day.
6. Slay the Stymphalian Birds.
7. Capture the Cretan Bull.
8. Steal the Man-Eating Mares of Diomedes.
9. Obtain the Girdle from the Amazon Queen.
10. Obtain the Cattle from the monster Geryon.
11. Steal the Golden Apples of the Hesperides.
12. Capture and bring back Cerberus the three headed guard dog of the underworld.

Heracles was told to complete these quests to redeem himself after killing his own children (however, he was really driven mad by his mother-in-law, Hera).

I've always like this myth for its symbolism and its connection with the zodiac sign (really cool to look at the 12 labors and juxtapose them with the 12 zodiac).

Myth

Here is my concept and as far as I got with paints. This is how I will dress up my kids. I'll set up a scene and photograph it haha. This one is of Thor standing triumphantly over the dead body of the Midgard Serpent.

DAWN

One of my favorite Chinese Mythological figures is The Monkey King. So...here he is. Woo!

For those unfamiliar, The Monkey King is from the old Japanese story "Journey to the West" which follows him on his long journey towards Five Element Mountain to attain a magical elixir that will grant him immortality from the mighty Dragon Emporer. Along the way he meets a talking a pig as well as a beautiful monk who is sought after by demons for his beauty and a drunken immortal.

The Forbidden Kingdom was based off of Journey to the West as well as Akira Toriyama's DragonBall series. Although there are a lot of adaptions out there I tried to make my own origonal version of Monkey on what's supposed to be an anchient scroll depicting his journey.

Week 6 Topic.....

I know some of you may think this is Cliche...but who cares. There is a few large big releases dealing with this theme and I want to jump on board. You have God of War 3 and Clash of the Titans.....so in honnor of these and because I am a huge fan...

this weeks Topic is MYTHOLOGY....

please illustrate a story or a bad ass creature from Greek Mythology....if you want to go ouside of Greek Mythology it is cool just let us know what you are working with. Try to focus on a story or a particular creature design or both!!

Darkness Within

This concept is based on the dark evil monster which lurks deep deep within ourselves. That monster who's existence is almost inevitable. The one that shows his ugly face every time we let the darkness take the wheel and drive us to do those things we all should steer clear off. Selfishness, greed, jealousy, anger, hatred. The dark side can be a very powerful force... and it certainly can destroy us. This is my worst fear.

On a side note i chose an angler fish because to me they are wicked cool and well they dwell in the darkness... waiting to lure they're pray in with their flashy lure... promising something good... consumption!!!! muahahah Anyway... it could use much more refinement and cleaning up (finals are preventing that). Critiques are appreciated.

Rapidly Growing Growths

I saw this television special about "The Tree Man of Indonesia" and how he had growths all over his body. He would try and remove them, but they kept growing back. The idea that this things will never go away and you watch helplessly as your worldly vessel becomes overtaken by these unrelenting growths, to the point of no longer having use of you limbs, scares me.

Drowning

Eh sorry if this submission is past the deadline...or too close to it. :(

My worst fear is drowning, so this is what I did in pencil and marker. Went with green and violet for the colors. I wish I could have done more however... :P

Fear

*phew* just barely made it. Hopefully this has some kind of quality to it.
Looks like Greg and I have a common fear. Having found such a wonderful woman that is willing to support, tolerate and love me means so much. To lose her would be devastating. To be alone after being blessed with someone so special is a fear that seems to always be floating quietly through my mind.

The Artist-Widower

This is my worst fear. Nothing... NOTHING... scares me more than this nightmare. For these paintings in my room will represent the pain, suffer, anger, emptiness, and hate that I would have if I ever lost the single most important thing in my life. The woman that I love is one in a million, I have never met anyone whose accepted me, tolerated my personality, understood where I'm coming from, and loved me so unconditionally just for who I am, even when I had nothing and wasn't the best boyfriend. She is faithful, understanding, social, and such a positive presence in life. I will NEVER find someone so right for me and the future that we hold together. I don't know many fears that will affect the rest of your life... but this will... And I hope to God that my career as an artist never takes it's turn into this dark alley, for if it does, I will devote my life to expressing the pain, anger and loneliness I feel inside to share with the world...

Finals haven't allowed me to work on this to the best I can =/ . Great topic though Adam.

even worse than being put in the boo! box again...

My worst fear is that I will someday not be able to do what I love... to be " cut off " from the ones I love and what I love to do. I just watched a youtube video of Ollie Jonston ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSNUBCWsptk ) I look at his hands, see how they shake... I wonder if the old master was able to continue to do what he loved... was he limited... trapped in the shell of the body he had... with a mind ready to create, but hands... hands that might have been limited... I hope to draw until I am in a pine box and six feet under... and if you were to dig me up, I would hope that you would find sketching on the inside of the box... But it is one of my worst fears...

Always in the back of my mind....

I'm scared of becoming feeble.....losing my mind....forgetting my kids names ....and losing my drawing hand........on top of that...........becoming unsuccessful in the industry. I'm not always taking steps to prevent these things but I use my fear to motivate me.....

Worst fear - sloth attack - a slow and painful death. Yeah they look cute, but watch out, those three toes are as sharp as a thousand slap chops.

I don't want to be alone....

A lot of people have fears and phobias but, most of them end with the same result, an even bigger fear, Death, Not just death but the fear of dying, or dying alone. No friends no family, no one to care.

EPIC JANITOR!

Here is my first post yo! I am excited to be a part of this blog, I was really surprised at the quality work I've seen so far. I am a graphic designer who loves life drawing and learning anything I can from animators. This somewhat of an epic narrative piece is inspired by a time in my life right before I decided to go back to school, when I was a janitor. Being a janitor sounds dirty and weird, yet it allowed me a lot of time to myself to read and sketch for hours on the clock - woot woot. It was a peaceful time for growth and introspection, I am so grateful for that experience - and this piece is dedicated to that.

The Legend of Keh-Tai

This is the tale of Keh-Tai's destiny to live and die only to be reborn again like the mighty pheonix. Forgive me for rushing this, but finals are coming up and I didn't have the time i wish i had to make this as awesome as I wanted. Peace.

Intense Naked Guy

I had a much larger piece planed, but I tried piecing it together and it turned out, well, piece-y. Blame Greg for the concept, he jokingly thought it would be funny for me to do something epic about figure modeling.

Mythological Me

So, my early interest in art was founded in comic books with super heroes riddled with ridiculous anatomy and strongly contrasted values. I always wanted to be the hero...I think most kids did. As I became a student of art, I began to appreciate composition dynamic posing and visual rhythm in classical artists........and I wanted to be the Artist. I find many similarities to classic mythology and modern day comic books. This is my tribute to my heroes, super and classical......

Mr. Amazing

This is the most Epic I can be! Anyone who has seen the movie knows, Mr. Amazing IS the Epic version of me. He is my life and personality if I lived in a comic book.For those of you who haven't seen it...shame on you, watch it, it's on the Kong.

I think about 5 in 10 boys under the age of 5 in the united states grabbed themselves a spanking for doing this me included. this is a sketch of me jumping through the screen door as my grandfather chases me. Good times

Stairs to Success

I know there are some minor flaws(Or possibly major ones), but I just had to tell myself to stop cause I have to do homework and this was consuming too much of my time haha. I would love to hear suggestions though on how to make this stronger, especially with the color. The piece holds alot of meaning to me as it expresses the one quality I know about myself that I can genuinely be proud of and the reasons why it is so important for me to succeed and how much is on the line.

Tell Me I Can't

With the subject matter, I felt a great urge to do something for this week.

Tell me that I can't. Tell me that I won't become something great. Tell me that I'm wasting my time, or I'm thinking too big. Tell me that I need to be practical and realistic. Tell me that I won't amount to anything. Tell me that I'm ordinary. Please tell me all of this, because then I will do any and everything within my power to prove you wrong, and then I will reach what I've worked so hard to achieve and I will stand tall and look upon a view that you can never fathom. Never in your entire lifetime.

Week 4 3/7/10 to 3/13/10

Topic: Autobiographical Epic

What?: Bascially, tell a story about yourself. Whether its made up, true, something that affected your life but happened to someone else........as long as it carries a personal narrative its all good. Secondly, tell your story in an exaggerated or Epic fashion. It can be an idealized representation to abstract piece representing the emotion of the narrative. The challenge is communicating your story well through composition and visual narrative.

The intention here is to learn more about each other and encourage us to use our life experience as motivation and reference when creating great work. My personal passion is to tell stories and I wanted to challenge my peers to do the same.

I didn't know much about the book but I just read the paragraph and I like the idea of the mirror and the seasons. I wish I can color this but I'm running out of time. (cry)

Brothers at War.....

'I'm sure I'm very sorry,' was all Alice could say; for the words of the old song kept ringing through her head like the ticking of a clock, and she could hardly help saying them out loud:

White Queen

'My finger's bleeding! Oh, oh, oh, oh!'

White Knight, Red Knight, and Alice

About six hours total. Decided to illustrate Alice's encounter with The White Knight and Red Knight, and their quirky battles. Honestly, if I had the time, I'd spend another four to five hours on this, to get down exactly what I wanted, but just means I got to work more in photo shop. Please tell me what your eye sees first, where is it led, and what do you interpret in the piece. I want to see if I was successful in my attempt to illustrate the story I had envisioned. Hope you guys like it. And of course, critiques are more than welcome.

Evil Alice

I didn't really illustrate any text specifically. I just wanted to make an evil version of Alice with a "cliched" tentacle arm. This is all I have time for this week as many term papers are in my immediate future. First time digital painting, so crits on that are most appreciated. I don't have a working wacom yet so it was all the laptop mouse.
