alice in the woods

The next moment soldiers came running through the wood, at first in twos and threes, then ten or twenty together, and at last in such crowds that they seemed to fill the whole forest. Alice got behind a tree, for fear of being run over, and watched them go by.

  1. hi, challenging scene you tried here. I like the idea you picked, but i think you need to have more of a focal point because everything seems to be to related in terms of value. I had to sit here for a minute to figure out what was what. A good way to do environments i have learned from some of my former digital teachers is to do your value groupings by clearly separating your foreground, middle-ground, and background in separate layers. make sure each one is separated clearly in its own value range.

  2. Great work Adam. I agree with what Chris said though. Maybe a way to really direct the eye to Alice would be to make the center of the composition the lightest (where Alice is up against the tree). This also has a ton psychological implications borrowing off a history of religious painting you could play with. Light(pure)center surrounded by the dark, brooding, chaotic masses, etc.

  3. Yeah like Chris said, I really have to look at your piece for awhile to really figure out what is going on. I like the foreground element in which you have the soldier on the far left, then with his spear reappearing on the right side, but the rest to me really looks muddled(Asides from the tress of course). I also see you have shadows from the trees being cast on the masses of soldiers, with sections of light being shown. From up close it looks great but I think the values are so close that it really just looks like extra information(Making it more difficult to read).

Like I said before, don't be afraid to just wipe out certain areas with a massive color and just work your back. Hopefully that'll help you out. But nonetheless great work and keep it goin man.

  5. I do agree with the crits above..If you were just to reserve the details for the mid ground element it would read better...for and back ground should not be as detailed. If the solider in the front was a darker value and less detailed your eye would not stop there you would be drawn into the frame. I like the color choices and the overall mood of the peice. Good Work..
