White Knight, Red Knight, and Alice

About six hours total. Decided to illustrate Alice's encounter with The White Knight and Red Knight, and their quirky battles. Honestly, if I had the time, I'd spend another four to five hours on this, to get down exactly what I wanted, but just means I got to work more in photo shop. Please tell me what your eye sees first, where is it led, and what do you interpret in the piece. I want to see if I was successful in my attempt to illustrate the story I had envisioned. Hope you guys like it. And of course, critiques are more than welcome.

  1. Nice piece Greg. I like how abstracted the elements in your illustrations are. It is especially interesting in a story devoted to confusion of the rational or slippage between realities. It is interesting to have the representational elements walk such as fine line as a way to manifest the overall narrative.

My eye starts with the red knight and through thematic repetition (horse and trees) is led to the more vertical position of the white knight. From the white knight the diagonal line of the cast shadow brings the eye back to the red knight.(?) I guess my only criticism is that maybe the value differentiation in the knights themselves could be a bit clearer. It was hard at first to distinguish different specific elements of their character. Minor criticism though.

    Overall really nice!

  2. very cool illustration, my eye was led directly to the red knight, and then to the white knight. I didnt even notice alice until i looked at the image a few more times though, shes the last thing i saw in the image, which could have been your intension?

  3. Hey greg nice post, Like the style you choose, I think it fits the narrative nicely. I like the poses you picked for the characters, lots of expression in the white knight. The only thing bugging me, or catching my eye is the tangent between the white knights lips and the horses in the BG. Also the red knights right hand seems a little oddly shaped. Other than that, solid post sir.

  5. Really Nice piece Greg! I wish the White Knight had two legs, though.

  6. The white knight's lip bugs me too. Just too close to the horse's color. I love the feel of it, though. Also, I think the white knight needs a shadow too, everything else has one. I really like it, I love the styling of it.
