  2. Great detail, but its hard for me to tell what is wrapped around the ships - is it water or an animal or ice.... Its probably because I'm not familiar with the story - the only Poseidon I know of is the ship that was capsized by a freak wave ^_^

  4. I think it's the texture you've given the water, it makes it look like roots to me. Very cool idea, man. Try throwing in some highlights, it might help sell the water. Other than that, good composition and detail.

  5. When starting a painting, always reinforce your composition even after you get past the peliminary sketching.
Sometimes we get stuck with details and texture, we forgot the underlying basic. I often have this problem as well. Remember, tools such as color, value, and alignment are there to help you reinforce your focal point. Which area of the composition you would like the viewers to see? If it is the ship then point to the ship.. if it is the giant octopi creature then I would darken everything except for the octopus. Right now, your value key is working against your composition. There are at least 3 area that seem to be equally important. This makes the viewers' attention got divided.

    Hope the crit helps.

  7. Agree with all the comments said so far. About the water, definitely it's the texture that you've given the water that makes it difficult to decipher what it is? Remember water is extremely reflective, so if a light is present the values of it'll change dramatically from the waves that are facing the light and it's opposite side. Also the perspective seems questionable on the boat in the foreground. I'll show you in person what I mean lol.

  9. cool adam, i like the line work man
all i would say, is what everyone else on here is saying about the water, but yeah its difficult. also, i'm not sure where the focal point is. it seems like you are trying to tell us the story with more than one.
the glowing eyed guy in the back, is that poseidon? if so i'd make him the focal point by darkening the lighting around him. unless you wanted it to be the ship then youre good, just lower the lighting in the backgound..
now tear my drawing apart! :P
