DAWN

One of my favorite Chinese Mythological figures is The Monkey King. So...here he is. Woo!

For those unfamiliar, The Monkey King is from the old Japanese story "Journey to the West" which follows him on his long journey towards Five Element Mountain to attain a magical elixir that will grant him immortality from the mighty Dragon Emporer. Along the way he meets a talking a pig as well as a beautiful monk who is sought after by demons for his beauty and a drunken immortal.

The Forbidden Kingdom was based off of Journey to the West as well as Akira Toriyama's DragonBall series. Although there are a lot of adaptions out there I tried to make my own origonal version of Monkey on what's supposed to be an anchient scroll depicting his journey.

  1. cool, is this your own character? i am so going to go for my own made-up mythological character if so lol... :D love the design layout and concept; the use of space is great. i enjoy the writing on the right side too, it gives a sense of mythness to it!

  3. I really enjoy the character design. I feel that there is too text on the right side. Althought the thoughtful pose tells a little about this character's make-up i would like to see more information about the mythology surrounding him- like back story, supporting characters, enemies, adventures he's been on etc. etc. I like your use of color and the scroll texture is a nice touch.
Overall critique: interesting and enjoyable character design and nice use of color but give us more character elements. (I guess i could have just put that, but sometimes I like to hear myself talk haha)

  5. Pretty much what Dustin. Also to add onto that, it took me awhile to really know what was going on with that left hand. Reason being is that the fingers almost meet the shadow section, and I thought the fingers were wrapping around that yellow thing(Basically I thought hand was supinated)

Keep it up though Jorry. You definitely have a style developing.

  6. Did anyone else see the olympic ad, i think it was last year, that played off this story. Jamie Hewlett's (gorillaz) people did it. I felt that it was an absolutly beautiful peace of art. It brought a tear to my eye.
