Ares & Athena

I tried to post earlier but life got in the way. I stuck with Greek Mythology. This piece is Ares: the god of war and Athena: the goddess of wisdom AND warfare. I figured they would make a good team. This was done in graphite on paper. Enjoy.

*Update! and just in time! there is some background for ya!

  1. And before any of you say anything, I know there's no background. I didn't have time. I posted an hour before deadline.

  2. This came out really nice, Joe. I really like the detail you placed in that thrown, very cool. My gripe would be that it is very heavy to the left compositionally, but the piece really does have a nice flow around the page. Very interesting what you chose to have remain in frame and have leave, as well as the placement of those objects. Love that owl, too, very convincing feathers.

  3. Nice detail! but the composition seems a little tight - I would have liked the owl and Athena to have a little more room, especially as there's a fair bit of negative space on the other side

  4. I agree with previous comments as far as the composition goes. It does seem a little tight, but you do have a nice flow going in there. My only beef is the anatomy on the stomach, It looks like he has a sideways eight-pack. All you've got to do is edit out the detail on the sides of his stomach and it'll look great.

Good job man. My favorite part of it is the owl getting ready to throw down with the snake. EPICE BATTLE!

  6. Well as far as the stomach Anatomy, that isn't the muscles of his stomach showing through, doing research of greek armor I found that the armored chestplates were designed similar to that although I don't know why.

As for the light source, well I was trying for from the top, I thought it was intuitive, but I guess not. I tried to shade and shadow the bottom, and undersides off everything.and thank you all.

  7. Looks good it reads well and i like your suttle elements. The proportions seem a little off, but it looks great, it may just be me. :)
